About Demokratiska
An important initiative. Unfortunately.
Few can have missed that freedom of expression and democracy are under pressure across the globe. Somewhere around 2023, we within the Erna Group and the Ander Foundation (Anderstiftelsen) began to consider what we could do to provide a counterbalance and take an initiative to highlight the importance of democracy – particularly for future generations. Unfortunately, this is becoming more relevant with each passing day. That is why we want to do our part and create something concrete and meaningful. In short, that is the background to Demokratiska – The House of Democracy.
A physical place in Karlstad, Sweden
We want to create a physical place for democracy and freedom of expression, somewhere in the heart of Karlstad. It will be a building of high architectural quality. We will take an international perspective, and over time Demokratiska will develop into a destination of international reputation. But one thing at a time. Work is now underway to find the right location to bring Demokratiska to life. Imagine if we could have the inauguration, let’s say, in the early 2030s.
What will the House of Freedom of Expression contain?
Quite a lot. The programme will rest on three pillars: knowledge, dialogue and inspiration. Permanent activities might include, for example, a media and democracy lab for young people, a democracy exhibition, lectures, workshops, debates, media training and research. Naturally, the building should also have a welcoming café or restaurant. Temporary activities could include exhibitions, conferences, concerts, performing arts and various youth gatherings in the name of democracy. The goal is for the house to be bustling with activity.
Vision
Demokratiska will strengthen the importance of democracy and freedom of expression for future generations.
Objectives
- A greater proportion of young people want to engage in public discourse
